The Beacon

The path to the lighthouse is rocky

The house where the keeper lives, abandoned,

Weeds grow up over the door.

The roof is slanted, windows broken

The inside of the lighthouse is littered with condoms,

its signal extinguished, the rocks below unlit.

A lonely beacon whose warning will forever be unheeded

“Stay away.’

Ships left to fend for themselves, crashing against the rocky shore

No more.

Meet the Creators

Sam Hamlin

I am a retired elementary school teacher.  I have been a watercolor painter for most of my adult life.  I trained with two exceptional painter-teachers, Ruth Franson of Hamilton and Betty Lou Schlemm of Rockport.  I owe my painting life to them and hear them speaking in my ear each time I pick up my brush.

Patricia Denn

A recent resident of Ipswich, I have been painting and studying watercolor for the last 25 years. I am impressed by the variety and range of watercolor and how it rewards the use of thick, vibrant color as well as delicate, transparent washes. My work reflects my preoccupation with how the play of light and shadow can transform everyday objects.  My subjects include city and landscapes, still life, florals, architectural subjects, and occasionally, portraits and figure studies. My work has been exhibited at Northeastern University, the West End Library in Boston, the Arlington Center for the Arts, the Massachusetts State House in Boston, the Winchester Public Library, and Ipswich Town Hall.
