The Tide
Dad liked to bring me out here.
Smell of tobacco on his jacket
hanging on the hook, he feels so near.
Bucket of tools left outside,
Waiting for the tide.
His face so clearly, weather-worn,
Days in the sun, wind and rain.
Hopeful summers - family is born.
We depended on him to provide,
He depended only on the tide.
Bent back, curled arms, working hard with the rake.
Only the best catch he would take.
I’d go with him watching at his side,
Holding buckets and memories of the tide.
Sand falls away, salt air in our faces.
You could always find him in the best places.
Keeping up with you, your sturdy stride,
You made me strong, running in the tide.
Blessed to have shared time together,
Exploring dreams and stormy weather,
Experience and practice is our guide,
Years go too fast, ebb and flow like the tide.
Now you’re older Pa, weary and frail.
It’s time for me to me carry the pail.
Bringing my daughter by my side,
Teaching her the magic of your tide.
