I hope, when i am gone
I hope, when i am gone
that all the birds still dive
from the maple to the feeder
and
that all the beds grow over
with mint and onion grass
i hope
the rabbit family still
grows old under our shed
and
the neighbors cat
still prowls
i hope
the howl of planes
still roars overhead
and yet always
gives way
to the wrens
and the swifts
and the sparrows
and
the sweet woodruff
who come back
and back
and back
i hope the kids in the schoolyard
still call out to all their friends
and say
oh look
there’s movement in the house
where no one ever lived
and where the lily
of the valley
grows
in every corner
of the yard.

Phyllis Whippen
Primarily a watercolor artist, but to make this piece for V/V I’ve added pencil, ink and pastel. I’ve been drawing and painting my whole life, working from photographs I take, I love highly detailed projects that are interesting to study and are full of intricate surprises! Landscapes are my favorite! And lots of color!
