Night Bloom

Can’t sleep in the tropical heat
Iponan Barangay, Cagayan de Oro
hand in hand we walk the evening
complex scent of flower over street
bump the wall with a shoulder
reach for each other in the humid air
never imagine a flower, nor your hand
bless the tie that stands
fox bat sings, feet to pollen, ruff to gold
cactus flower big as bread loaf
Naomi and Ruth make a life after all
after long famine in Moab
One-Night-Beauty, Ceroid Cacti
if only we could touch her succulent face
caress her eskers, nuzzle her drumlin
her stamens, her pistil, two stories high
flower makes food in the midnight gloom
dragon fruit in the jungle sky, as
bats, moths, lovers, all of us
fling our bodies to the night bloom
